On this Morocco adventure, travel with our expert local guide on a journey through the ancient caravan routes of the west from the walled Imperial Cities and scenic high Atlas Mountain passes to the well-preserved Roman ruins and, by camel, across the shifting dunes of the mighty Sahara. To understand Morocco’s rich history, we’ll visit the remains of the 800-year-old elaborate Hassan Tower, the tomb of a dreaded Moroccan sultan and the region’s largest and best-preserved Roman ruins. We lift the veil on a vibrant modern world by visiting small villages and spice-filled markets, exploring the site where Gladiator was filmed and participating in a henna ceremony. Along the way, rest in lavish, Moorish-style accommodations (including a desert encampment).
Wandering through the medina in Fes was a highlight. The dye vats were fascinating, and for me, it was Abdelouahhab’s strongest moment as a guide because we saw the vats from far above at a tourist shop, and when we pleaded to get a closer look, Abdelouahhab was able to take us down a back alley to a local entrance, where we really got to close to the (smelly) heart of the dye work.
