The 32 room Refugio Amazonas provides an enriching stopover on the boat ride between Puerto Maldonado and the TRC. Surrounded by towering Brazil nut trees, the lodge offers miles of hiking trails, jungle biking and access to a wildlife-rich oxbow lake. Accommodations are simple, constructed of palm thatch and native materials with an outer-facing wall open to the rainforest. Each room has a private bathroom with cold water only, a hammock or lounge chair and mosquito net-draped beds to accommodate two or three people. Doors are replaced by drapes and electricity is generator-based, turned on once a day to recharge batteries.
