Pousada Aguape Pantanal Extension

Pousada Aguape is a working cattle ranch located in Brazil's South Pantanal and has been owned and run by the same family for over 150 years.  The ranch land consists of typical wetland floodplains, lowland forests and the Aquidauana River, a diverse habitat that attracts a great variety of Pantanal wildlife with over 300 species of birds, including the endangered Hyacinth Macaw.  Guests can enjoy guided wildlife tours on horseback, fish for piranha and explore the river by boat,  hike across the floodplains in the dry season or  photograph wildlife from the vantage of  4x4 safari vehicles.  For family travel to the Pantanal, Pousada Aguape is a great option due to the relatively close proximity to Campo Grande airport, the working farm environment, friendly staff and amenities like AC, a swimming pool and volley ball courts.  For serious wildlife enthusiasts with more than a few days, a smaller lodge in a more remote location (such as Barra Mansa) is a better option.

Day 1: Arrive Campo Grande Airport via commercial flight from Rio de Janeiro or Sao Paulo. Transfer overland through the vast grasslands of the Pantanal to Aguape Pousada. You'll be welcomed and shown to your rooms with time to relax before dinner. [D]

Day 2 & 3: Two full days to discover the wildlife of the Pantanal.  Accompanied by an English-speaking naturalist guide, select from a variety of tours to explore the surrounding ecosystem.  Saddle up and search for wildlife on horseback, the most common transportation used by locals. Horses suitable for a variety of riding levels, including complete novices, are available and exploring by horseback offers a unique vantage point for spotting wildlife such as maned wolves, capybara, giant anteaters and marsh deer, among others.  Photograph wildlife from an open 4x4 vehicle, board a motor boat to search for caiman and birds along the river's edge or join your guide for a hike along trails through thicker vegetation where you'll be able to closely observe the flora and some of the smaller fauna of the Pantanal.  Families may also enjoy learning how to 'handle' cattle like the cowboys of the Pantanal by joining the local ranch hand's for part of their day.  All meals and overnight at Pousada Aguape. Day 4: After breakfast you are transferred back to the Camp Grande airport for your onward commercial flight. [B]
