Elathottam Home Stay

Located on the banks of Periyar Lake at Kumily, the Elathottam cardamom plantation is 10k from the entrance to Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady with its elephants, sambars, tigers, gaurs and macaques. A dirt track hewn into the side of the mountain takes you high up into the clouds right up to Elathottam. In a clearing at the heart of the estate is a quaint little cottage, built over half a century ago out of granite and still used as an estate bungalow. Besides its old world charm and rustic simplicity the cottage has magnificent views of vast stretches of clouds, thickly layered atop verdant hilltops, and unforgettable sunsets and sunrises. ‘Ela’ is short for ‘elakka’ which means cardamom and ‘thottam’ translates to the word plantation. And that’s just what Elathottam is – a home stay on an operational cardamom estate perched at a height of 4100 feet above sea level with wonderful views over the surrounding countryside. Although the plantation takes in house guests, this is not a hotel, and to stay here is to be the guests of a plantation family. Nearby are wonderful walks along the lake. Meals are supplied and the bungalow has full facilities including your own bathroom with hot and cold water.
