MAASAI
RITE OF PASSAGE
“The
most treasured experience with my granddaughter Holly was participating
in a Maasai gathering to celebrate the rites of passage from
warrior to elder. We felt privileged to attend as the ceremony
had not taken place in this part of Maasailand for twenty years.
It was clearly not part of any tourist itinerary. Our Wildland
guide purchased a cow to donate to the Maasai community to honor
their ceremony taking place near our camp. A friendship blossomed
between Holly and a Maasai teenage girl named Zena who was serving
food. What nations could learn from those two young girls who
spoke from their hearts. When we take time to mark a passage
or participate in a ritual while traveling we make connections,
bond our families, and are able to celebrate the seasons of life
that unite us all.” Read

TARANTULA
TUG-OF-WAR
“The
evening guided hike was one of the highlights of the trip. Our
guide Mark, an eight year veteran of Monteverde, pointed out
all kinds of interesting insects and frogs that are only active
at night. He showed us how to lure hand-sized tarantula spiders
out of their holes by tapping a small stick at the entrance and
then pulling the stick out when the spider bites it. Both my
brother John and I tried it on different tarantulas with great
success. The highlight of the evening was the sighting of a rare
cat called a Margay, which is a bit bigger than a house cat.
The guide had only seen one on three occasions during his eight
years of guiding at Monteverde, so he was all pumped up.” Read

LIKE TRAVELING WITH TURKISH
FRIENDS
“We
felt more like we were traveling with Turkish friends than on
a guided tour. We appreciated the ability to get so close to
the land through hikes and close to everyday people during many
village visits. It was really a perfect combination of outdoor
activities and a cultural/historical experience. Alper was a
fantastic guide—knowledgeable, enthusiastic and great sense
of humor! His choice of historical sites, hikes, foods, craftspeople
was excellent.”

THE
PERFECT FAMILY VACATION
“It's
our last night. Everyone's smiling and a little sad at the same
time. I'm more stunned than anything. For once, a trip has lived
up to expectations, even surpassed them. I may not have caught
any fish, but I'm taking home the bragging rights to a near-impossible
score — the perfect family vacation.” Read

VILLAGE HOMESTAY
“I
loved Sam’s village in the Crooked Tree Reserve. It is
so hard to go on trips and always be the outside tourist, never
connecting in any real way with the people who live there. Here
we did. Marna even went to church! Meanwhile, I hung out in the
hammock connecting with a horde of iguanas. We were able to watch
the community at play, at work, and at worship. We took long
walks, struck up conversations with the locals and it was for
me a highlight.”

MEETING THE MEDICINE MAN
“I
met a medicine man in the Amazon who took us through the jungle
and gave me a remedy for diarrhea. He cut a piece of a tree and
made it into a tea for me to drink which he brought to me that
night. My ailment was cured the next morning! I also had more
energy than I'm used to and felt even better than before. To
see a medicine man go about his work in the wilds and be given
the opportunity to talk with this special person was the highlight
of my trip. I'll never forget the care he gave me! It has touched
me deeply.”
