Letter from the Director
THE WILD STYLE IN PERU

Kurt KutayOpportunities for personal discovery and adventure are unlimited on a Wildland Adventure in Peru. Our local guides not only share their knowledge of ecology, Inca archaeology and indigenous culture. They take you beyond the facts to experience the simple rhythms of daily life as well as the mystical and sublime nature of this amazing country. Since 1986, we offer personalized and flexible itineraries for individuals, families and small groups from the Andes, to the Amazon, Lake Titicaca, Nazca, the north coast and beyond. I recently traveled to Peru to meet with our outfitters, inspect jungles lodges, and explore new areas and activities. It is this commitment to further discovery that that will continue to define The Wild Style. I invite you to join us and see for yourself!

Wildest Regards,

Kurt Kutay

THE ANDES AND AMAZON

Peru is a magical, spectacular destination. With some of the most biologically-rich rainforests on Earth as well as the spectacular Andes and one of the planet's most renowned archaeological treasures, the mystical citadel of Machu Picchu, Wildland Adventures believes travelers to Peru owe it to themselves to experience all aspects of this amazing region.

TREKKING THE INCA TRAIL
The most popular trek in South America, the Inca Trail, is a Wildland Adventures specialty. We have a long history of involvement in conservation of the Trail as well as the magnificent Machu Picchu archaeological site itself. Many prospective travelers express concern that the trail will be crowded, but it’s all in the timing, and understanding the ebb and flow of the trek. Instead of disembarking the train at KM82, along with every other trekking group, we have a comfortable base camp along the Urubamba River. We take an extra day there, acclimating and hiking up to the Inca ruins of Q’ente, a spectacular lookout and ancient spiritual site perched high over the Sacred Valley. But the real advantage of our base camp (besides the hot showers) is the opportunity to start on the main Inca Trail the following morning…ahead of the next arriving group of trekkers. You experience the ancient pilgrimage route with more serenity, more intimacy.

PATACANCHA VILLAGE DAY HIKE
Beyond the well-trod corridor of the Urubamba Valley, stretching between Cusco and Machu Picchu, lies the charming Quechua village of Patacancha. Barely 1 hour from the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a narrow dirt road takes you high into the Andes, to 12,500’ elevation. On this easy, off-the-beaten-path day hike our native guide leads you down a meandering valley through meadows where llamas and alpacas roam amid a patchwork of cultivated fields. Here you can observe the native Quechua way of life, where crops are sown and textiles woven with simple hand tools that have been in use for centuries. Admire weaving demonstrations, try your hand at ancient methods of agricultural production, and visit the school where you can donate supplies to the teacher. It’s an easy day trip that makes your Wildland Adventure an even more authentic experience.

MANU AND TAMBOPATA
If you want to see wildlife and learn about rain forest ecology, if you want to experience the mystery and awe of the Amazon basin, if you have only one chance to venture into the Amazon, the remote corners of southern Peru and Bolivia should be your choice. The protected regions of Manu, Tambopata-Candamo and the Bahuaja–Sonene National Park are some of the most pristine forests on Earth. With the highest levels of species diversity of rain forest mammals, birds, and reptiles in the entire Amazon, traveling here will forever change your ideas of “jungle.”

We offer several routes and itineraries into the best ecolodges in Manu and Tambopata, accompanied by specialist Amazon guides. You explore in small paddle canoes on oxbow lakes, hike through luxuriant rain forests, ascend a scaffold staircase into the rain forest canopy, and may witness a macaw lick where hundreds of parrots congregate. Our carefully designed itineraries offer the best opportunities for observing tapirs, giant river otters, monkeys, black caimans, tayras and agoutis, and with luck a jaguar, ocelot or puma. You can also search for more than 1,000 bird species, including the highest concentrations in the world of macaws and parrots, as well as toucans, waterfowl, and exotic songbirds. Our jungle lodges offer enlightening natural history experiences and uniquely authentic cultural encounters.
