Knowledge is Security: Report from Morocco
Morocco remains a peaceful country and Moroccan people have a positive attitude towards Americans. So, there is no animosity against our American vistors. More than that, Moroccans treat people as an individual and never as belonging to a community or to an ethnic group. The best example was the US adventure travel group with whom I was traveling Sep 30 - Oct 14 after 9/11; they were feeling nothing. More than that, if it wasn't for CNN they wouldn't have known there was a problem in the world. They had no sense of fearfulness, and according to them, they felt safer in Morocco than in the States.
I can say to Wildland travelers that there is security in Morocco everywhere especially in all the touristic areas. The client should expect 3-4 hours security on check out for the international departure. It's true that the economy is affected by this new fact because a major part of it is based on tourism. We still don't see as many American tourists as before September 11, but there are just as many visitors from other nationalities, and Americans are treated no differently.
I know that some Americans feel uneasy to get out of their home to visit another Muslim country, but our work can help to spread better understanding and knowledge of our cultures. I truly believe that our mutual clients can became ambassadors for peace and understanding once they return home to their friends and families. So, we all hope and pray for peace and harmony for our world.
