Unseasonably Cold Weather in Peru 2010
Kurt Kutay
The best time to travel in Peru is during our summer in the northern hemisphere which is winter south of the Equator; this time of year it is the driest and most sunny weather in the Andes and the Amazon. However, Peru is experiencing an exceptionally cold winter season in 2010. This is a result of the La Nia weather phenomenon which is defined as a cooler than normal sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean that impacts global weather patterns. This week in the capital city of Lima on the coast they had the lowest recorded temperatures in 46 years: 46.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Southern Peru (Lake Titicaca and Puno) has also received temperatures as low as 11 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you are traveling to Peru be sure to take extra warm clothing including a parka, hat, gloves, etc. Wearing several layers of clothing that can be easily added or removed is the best choice since temperatures vary greatly within the course of a day. As always, wear comfortable and sturdy walking shoes for all trips, or sturdy light-weight hiking boots if you are trekking. Check out our WildGear store for suggestions on what to take.
