Hurricane Dean Update: All Is Well
Jeff Stivers
On Tuesday, August 21 Hurricane Dean hit land 40 miles north-east of Chetumal, Mexico north of the Belize border. The storm weakened from a category five to a category three with winds of 125 mph as it crossed on to the mainland. Last minute evacuations took place along the Yucatan Peninsula and other travelers took shelter. The National Hurricane Center in Florida said the Yucatan Peninsula, Belize, Guatemala and northern Honduras could expect heavy rainfall which could cause flash floods and landslides.
On Wednesday, we spoke with our Belizean guide, Sam Tillett, who lives in the village of Crooked Tree near Belize City. He stayed home and reported only light winds and a mere half-inch of rain. There was no significant damage anywhere on the mainland where we conduct our trips. Black Bird Caye reported only minor damage in the form of beach erosion and they expect operations to resume normally by the end of August.
We just completed a busy summer travel season in Belize. August concludes our scheduled trip departures until the holiday season beginning in December. For more information on Belize, Sam Tillett and our adventures, please visit our Belize homepage.
