Chaa Creek wins Cond Nast Ecotourism Award
We congratulate Mick and Lucy Fleming of the Lodge at Chaa Creek in Belize's Cayo District. The Lodge at Chaa Creek was recently recognized by Cond Nast Traveler magazine as a 2002 Ecotourism Award winner. Chaa Creek has long been one of our favorite accommodations in Belize's Cayo district and is included on our Belize Explorer itinerary. Cond Nast Traveler recognizes outstanding tour operators, hotels/resorts, and destinations for achievements in sustainable tourism. (Wildland Adventures was acknowledged several years ago.)
When Chaa Creek first opened its doors, tourism to the interior of Belize was virtually unheard of. Although ecotourism was an unfamiliar term at the time, blending tourism with conservation was a basic concept behind the lodge development. By 1990 Chaa Creek was declared a Private Reserve by Conservation International. Chaa Creek has been our Cayo District base for nearly ten years, introducing guests to Belize's interior through a variety of activities including birding, hiking, swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, cave exploration, and mountain biking. The remote rain forests and river bank setting combined with classy, thatched-roof individual cabanas creates a feeling of seclusion, a perfect balance of comfort in the wilds. The cuisine features American, Mexican and Belizean dishes served in the elegant open-air restaurant. The dining room, bar and cottages are constructed from local hardwoods and thatched in "bay leaf" palm. Each spacious cottage has Mexican tiled floors, large mahogany beds and private bathrooms. The beauty of the setting is surpassed only by the excellent service of the friendly local staff. Chaa Creek's long standing commitment to the principles of ecotourism combined with beautiful accommodations and superior service make the lodge a perfect fit for our "Wild Style".
