Laikipia Reserve
Second only to the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve, the Laikipia Reserve boasts a large, diverse array of wildlife. With spectacularly beautiful settings and a dense population of African safari animals and birdlife, the Laikipia Reserve is an ideal location for guided walking safaris or game drives.
The Laikipia Reserve stretches across a vast plateau bordering the Great Rift Valley and magnificent escarpments that descend into the Northern Frontier District. Within the reserve, a small population of ethnic groups sparsely inhabits the grasslands, having little effect on the game in the region. While the Kikuyu people of Kenya make up nearly 60% of the population, there is also a balance of Mikogodo Maasai, Samburu, Borana, Kalenjin, Somali and Turkana.
In addition to Africas Big Five population, the region hosts one of the biggest and most diverse mammal populations in Kenya. Many endangered species find refuge among the assorted habitats of open grassland, basalt hills, permanent springs, isolated kopjes, and thick cedar forests. The Ewaso Nyiro and Ewaso Narok rivers wind through the reserve providing a refreshing sanctuary for the dense wildlife.
Safari lovers may encounter African wild dog, black and white rhino, and the semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope. Grevy's zebra, which was hunted almost to extinction for its fine, desirable skin, is beginning to reestablish itself in the area. Eight rhino sanctuaries give shelter to the significant population of these endangered creatures.
