Khwai Concession
This private concession lies in the northern region of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. The Khwai River, which is the northernmost "finger" of the delta's alluvial fan, is the main life source for the region.
The lagoons, reed beds and surrounding woodlands provide lush, diverse habitats for the wide variety of wildlife that inhabit the region. Hippo and crocodile lurk in the waters of the Khwai Channel while buffalo and red lechwe graze along the fringe. The acacia lined river is a favorite for large herds of giraffe. Large palm islands and dry land areas are contrasted with lagoons so clear you can see through to the sandy bottom where malachite kingfishers and silver fish dart about.
The Khwai Concession is the raptor capital of Botswana, home
to the bateleur, tawny, martial, and brown snakes. Over twelve species of
eagles drink from the isolated stretch of water and feed on the quelea.
In dry months, it is not unusual to see hundreds of
elephants bathing in the waters and grazing in large packs. The region also
attracts lion, the endangered wild dog and spotted hyena.
This private concession provides spectacular vistas and
wildlife encounters. In an effort to benefit the local community, all proceeds
from tourism in the concession go directly to help the local people and local
projects through the Khwai Community Trust.
