Juneau
Juneau, Alaska's state capital, was founded in 1888 by Joe Juneau after gold was found in nearby Snow Slide Gulch. Nestled between mountains and the Tongass National Forest, Juneau is the only state capital not accessible by land; the city can only be reached by sea or by air.
One of Juneau's most dramatic features is the nearby Juneau Icefield. The Juneau Icefield is over 1700 square miles and has been the site of studies on climate change, glacial formation, and botanical processes for over fifty years. The most well-known of Juneau's glaciers is the Mendenhall Glacier, which is just 12 miles from the city.
Activities in Juneau include kayaking, hiking, whale watching, and helicopter tours. Juneau is the jumping off point for most adventures in Southeast Alaska, including our Glaciers and Grizzlies.
