Crystal Skull of Lubaantun, Belize

Explore the Maya underworld in Belize caves.
In the new movie "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" Indy is on another adventure to capture an ancient and mysterious treasure. Why not experience your own family adventure? Experience a real life adventure firsthand on our Wildland Adventures Undiscovered Belize Family Tour, which includes a visit to the discovery site of the famous Mitchell-Hedges Crystal Skull at the ancient Mayan ruins of Lubaantun,  Belize, the "Home of the Skull".

The home of the Crystal skull is under the Lubaantun ruins.
Immerse yourself in Wildland Adventures Undiscovered Belize Adventure family tour to explore the beauty of Belize while experiencing the legend and mystique of the Crystal Skull. The real world story of the infamous Skull of Doom begins with F.A. Mike Mitchell-Hedges, an English adventurer, traveler, and writer with many similarities to the Spielberg action hero. The story told is that his daughter Anna found the crystal skull buried under a collapsed altar inside a temple in Lubaantun, Belize. Others believe he bought the skull from an antiques dealer in New York and planted it in the Mayan ruin for her to discover on her birthday. No one really knows how the skull was acquired or what powers, secrets, truths or codes are contained within this mysterious artifact. To add to the mystery, with the exception of its detachable jaw, this skull is formed from a single piece of quartz - inexplicably carved against the crystal's natural axis, which should have shattered during its construction. Even today, many people believe these Crystal Skulls have supernatural powers, some good... and others more nefarious.

Thousands of counterfeit crystal skulls are produced every year in Brazil, China, and Germany. But there are a handful of these macabre objects that are considered possible relics of ancient history that have fueled intense interest and controversy among archaeologists, scientists, spiritualists, and museum officials for more than a century. Many believe these skulls were carved thousands or even tens of thousands of years ago by an ancient Mesoamerican civilization. But, scientists and archaeologists are dubious. According to National Geographic, recent electron microscope analyses of skulls by the British Museum and the Smithsonian Institution revealed markings that could only have been made with modern carving implements.
