Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru in Nakuru National Park is perhaps Kenya's best known visual image. Lake Nakuru is internationally famous for its flamingos, who feed on the abundant brine shrimp in the shallow lake that ranges from five to thirty square kilometers in size depending on the rains. The image of hundreds of thousands of pink flamingos gathered in massive flocks in the shallows around the shore of this soda lake, and when disturbed, rocketing elegantly into the sky, is one of the lasting images of any visit to Kenya.
Nakuru has more than just flamingos. Nakuru National Park is an important sanctuary for Black and White Rhino, which are often seen resting under acacia trees by the lake shore. The park abounds with huge herds of waterbuck, zebra, buffalo and more. There are several large prides of lion in the park, and Nakuru offers one the best chances of seeing leopard in Kenya. There are also a number of the endangered Rothschild giraffe.
