Trip Itinerary Extensions
We offer a variety of day tours and
extensions in Chile that can easily be
integrated into one of our itineraries
or incorporated into a custom itinerary.
Marvel in the rich history of this country
by joining one of our Santiago city tours
or indulge in the delights of Chile’s
Maipo Valley vineyards on a wine tasting
tour. We offer visits to unique areas,
such as the arid and tranquil Atacama
Desert or mysterious and remote Easter
Island. Satisfy your adventurous spirit
in the charming Lakes District or enjoy
the serenity of Chiloe Island.
SANTIAGO CITY TOUR
The half-day guided tour presents a blend of 19th century European, Spanish
colonial and modern architecture that make up this vibrant, modern city of
South America. The tour includes historical places such as the Santa Lucia
Hill where the city was founded in 1541, the Plaza de Armas and Cathedral,
fashionable residential areas and a view of the city from San Cristobal Hill.
SANTIAGO HISTORIC MEMORY TOUR
If you seriously want to delve into Chile’s sordid recent political history,
we highly recommend this special tour exposing a profound look into contemporary
Chile's national mind-set. Your guide, a native English-speaker and an expert
in Chilean political history, takes you into the National Cemetery, where you
visit the tombs of Presidents and leading figures of long-ago, including Christian
Democrat President Eduardo Frei Montalva and Socialist Party President Salvador
Allende, as well as a memorial honoring those who "disappeared" during
the 17-year Pinochet regime. You visit the Victor Jara Foundation, namesake
to one of Chile's greatest songwriters who was executed in Santiago's National
Stadium just days after the September 11, 1973 coup. The tour ends with a visit
to the Villa Grimaldi Peace Park, one of the principal torture centers during
the Pinochet era. It’s grim, but an event not to be forgotten.
WINE COUNTRY EXCURSION
Chile has a worldwide reputation for its excellent wines, derived from French
vines that adapted to the rich volcanic soils outside of Santiago. The tour
begins with a visit to one of the most renowned vineyards. From here we continue
to Cajón del Maipo, a narrow valley by the Maipo River, at the foot
of the Andes. Small villages dot the hillsides, providing charm and beauty
to this picturesque landscape.
SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA
3 Days/2 Nights
The Atacama is the driest desert in the world and is one of the most spectacular
and bizarre landscapes on Earth. Based from the lovely and unique Terrantai
Hotel (or similar) in the adobe pueblo of San Pedro, you have many excursions
to choose from including the archaeology museum and the ancient village ruins
of Tulor, Salar de Atacama the world’s largest salt lake, the Laguna
Chaxa Nacional Flamingo Reserve to observe flocks of flamingos in their natural
habitat, and hikes among massive sand dunes and bizarre salt formations of
the Valley of the Moon. Enjoy time on your own to go walking or mountain bike
or horse-back riding. Before you return to Calama to depart, stroll through
the town of Toconao, built of white volcanic stone.
EASTER ISLAND
4 Days/3 Nights
Located 2,500 miles from the continent in the Pacific Ocean, Easter Island
is an open air museum showcasing a fascinating lost culture. Today, the Rapanui
are friendly, hospitable people, and the landscape is truly amazing - with
its volcanic craters, lava formations, beaches, brilliant blue water, and archaeological
sites.
CHILOE ISLAND
Chiloe Island is linked to the Chilean mainland by ferries that arrive at the
Island’s northern tip. This forested island is only about 112 miles
long and 31 miles wide. The panorama of rolling hills and pristine coastline
lend to the extreme beauty of this destination. An enjoyable boat ride can
take you through these pristine waterways, where snow-capped volcanoes can
be seen from across the Gulf of Ancud.
LAKES DISTRICT
Chile’s Lakes District is a display of picture-postcard landscapes, dotted
with volcano peaks, flourishing vegetation and iridescent lakes. This area
is a hub for adventurous travelers who enjoy climbing, river rafting, mountain
biking and horseback riding. Activities in the Lakes District can be selected
to suit your interests, even if that means you just want some time to relax.
A popular route through the Lakes District
includes visiting the charming towns
of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas, which
were settled by Germans in the mid-19th
century and offer superb volcanic views
across tranquil lakes. Visit Petrohue
Falls and and a scenic hike of the Osorno
Volcano. Spend your last day in the area
rafting the Petrohue River or climbing
this imposing volcanic peak (8,700 feet).
