> Know Before You Go
The more you know about the destination and the conditions
you can expect on your Wildland Adventure, the more you
will enjoy your experience. We invite you to call our destination
specialists at 1-800-345-4453 so that we can answer any
questions or concerns. The following information will also
help you prepare for the exciting experience ahead and enable
you to get the very most from your trip.
Air Travel Arrangements
We are pleased to assist you with your flights to Alaska.
We are familiar with the best schedules and routing to major
airports in Alaska. However, unlike the discounted fares
we offer to our international destinations, discounted fares
for domestic air travel in the United States are not available.
Therefore, we suggest you consider purchasing your tickets
through an online reservations system, or we can do it for
you for a $40 per ticketing fee. Local flights on your Wildland
Adventure in Alaska are included in your trip cost where
indicated and are always weather dependent. The principal
airlines we recommend for travel to Alaska are Alaska Airlines,
United, and Continental, which usually offer the most direct
flights and the best reliability.
Health
Once you sign up for a trip, we provide detailed information
about health precautions and possible immunizations for
travel to each destination. A consultation with your doctor,
a local travel clinic, or public health office will help
you decide which medications or inoculations are necessary
for your safe participation on a trip. Wildland Adventures
staff are not licensed medical authorities, however, we
know the exact areas, environments and conditions under
which you will be traveling, all of which can affect the
relative risk of exposure to health conditions and help
you make decisions concerning immunizations and prescription
medicines. Preventative measures against infectious diseases
may require advance planning so plan ahead for immunization.
Pregnant women and parents traveling with young children
should consult their physician or pediatrician.
Alaska is an exceptional travel destination that requires
little preparation for your health care. In general, you
do not need to be any more concerned about your health than
you would traveling anywhere else in the United States.
No immunizations are required for travel to Alaska. The
most dangerous health threat in Alaska is hypothermia, though
risk to our travelers is negligible. The best way to be
comfortable and safe in the outdoors of Alaska is to dress
in layers and wear materials that continue to insulate when
wet. Although mosquitoes can be bothersome in Alaska’s
interior, most visitors are relieved to find they are not
nearly as bad as anticipated (not as bad as a backyard in
the Midwest during summer)! The best protection is use of
insect repellent and wearing lightweight, natural colored
clothing with long pants and long sleeves. All accommodations
on Wildland Adventures excursions are fully-enclosed.
VISA and Passport Requirements
Visa and passport are not required for American citizens
for travel to Alaska. Non-US citizens should check with
their local U.S. consulate for more information.
Reading List
Enrich your travels by using our recommended reading list
and online ordering through Longitude Books. For each destination,
we feature "Essential Reading," four or five books
that are a comprehensive introduction to each region. This
list favors well-written, concise books that capture the
spirit of a place including guidebooks, memoirs, histories,
field guides, natural histories, novels or other great books.
You will also find the new and hard-to-find books, field
guides, classic accounts of exploration, travel narratives,
books on art and archaeology, novels, essays and well-written
academic books. When you sign up for a Wildland Adventure
in Alaska we include a complimentary membership in the Alaska
Natural History Association which includes a 15% discount
on their extensive bookstore of Alaska publications.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Will I encounter lots of mosquitoes in Alaska?
Mosquitoes are not nearly as bad as anticipated, but good
insect repellant is a must. Also recommended is wearing
light colors, and snug fitting parka, and tucking your pants
into your boots. Mosquitoes generally are more prevalent
in the warm interior than the cool coastal regions.
2. Will I get seasick on my Alaska voyage?
Traveling Alaska with Wildland Adventures is often
by boat, small plane, and overland over sometimes rough,
dirt roads. Motion sickness can be a problem for those travelers
who are susceptible to it. Anti-motion sickness medications
and acupressure wristbands are recommended if needed. However,
every effort is made to make our guests comfortable. On
board our charter vessel in Prince William Sound we anchor
in calm, protected coves and the captain alters course whenever
necessary to avoid swells.
3. What will the weather be like when I’m
traveling?
Alaska’s tourist season is June through August when
days are long (light until 11-12 PM) and nights are short.
Temperatures vary, especially from the coastal regions to
inland, and usually range from the low 50s to the low 70s.
Weather conditions vary significantly from clear sunny days
to cloudy and rainy conditions. Most travelers can expect
sun and rain on any journey in Alaska. We help you prepare
for all conditions.
