Travel with Americans for UNFPA Tanzania Extension
Feel Africa beneath your feet on this quintessential walking safari as we traverse across northern Tanzania through premier game parks and wildlife concessions. We stay in the only luxury camp in Tarangire with permission to go on bush walks inside the national park. Followed by a flight into a remote bush camp located on a private concession in the vast plains of the Serengeti ecosystem where we track game under the guidance of an expert ranger and naturalist guide. Depending on the season and location of the great migration, camp is set at the best vantage point to observe the spectacle of wildebeest and zebra herds and the predators that track them. We witness the rhythms of the bush and the constant struggle of survival on night drives outside the parks and enjoy personal encounters with native people, walking with Maasai warriors and visiting indigenous artisan workshops and markets. All accommodations offer private luxury amenities with distinctive character in superb locations that show sensitivity to the environment and value the neighboring indigenous communities.
DAY 1 : AUG 17: ARRIVE TANZANIA & TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK A short early morning flight from Nairobi brings us to Kilimanjaro International Airport in time to meet the quick flight to Tarangire National Park. Named after the Tarangire River, Tarangire National Park is famous for its large elephant herds and the enormous migratory herds of wildebeest, zebra and buffalo, and the lions, leopards and other predators that shadow the migration. The elusive greater and lesser kudu are frequently spotted as well as eland and oryx. An afternoon game drive allows us to continue to learn the rhythms of the bush under the tutelage of our knowledgeable ranger. Overnight Swala Camp [BLD]
DAY 2 : AUG 18: TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK Today we explore Tarangire with morning and afternoon game drives. The majestic baobab trees are a notable feature in this park, as are the tree-climbing lions that have made Tarangire famous. As part of their commitment to the local community the team that run our accommodation at Swala Camp have initiated a pioneering community conservation project which has included the construction of a primary school (the Gijedabung School) in the nearby village of Mamire, which borders the park. The camp organized the construction of classrooms and other facilities, paying local villagers to manufacture the required concrete building blocks. In addition, we learn about the bee-keeping project that provides valuable income while conserving the environment. Overnight Swala Camp [BLD]
DAY 3 : AUG 19: NGORONGORO After driving northward through Tarangire National Park we stop at the Eselelai Womens Cultural Boma to learn more about the traditional Maasai lifestyle, culture and handcrafts. This venture was established in 1999 with support from the African Wildlife Foundation in an effort to provide conservation based tourism opportunities for disadvantaged women. Today the women of the Boma successfully manage everything - from the manufacture of the handcrafts themselves to their sale, and the management of the enterprise. Next we travel onward to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Gibbs Farm. On arrival after check in, we recommend a leisurely wander through the lush flower and herb gardens to chat with the resident horticulturist or to visit Charles Bies, a traditional third generation Makonde carver who has lived and worked on the Farm since 2002. The lodges artist-in-residence program has recently expanded to offer other select artists from Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda the opportunity to live and work on the farm. Overnight Gibbs Farm [BLD]
DAY 4 : AUG 20: NGORONGORO We arise early and, descending 2,000 feet in altitude as we drop down the escarpment into the Ngorongoro Crater, we embark on a wonderful day of game viewing inside this spectacular classified World Heritage site. The caldera offers stunning scenery, close viewing opportunities and high concentrations of wildlife with more than 20,000 animals spread throughout a variety of ecosystems. Under the guidance of our expert ranger we search for the rare black rhinoceros, elephant bulls with enormous tusks, the black-maned lions that stalk among the wildebeest, and Thomson's gazelles, zebra, reedbucks, monkeys, and baboons. We may see Maasai clad in their traditional red clothing tending to their cattle. We take a picnic lunch on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater surrounded by some of the world's most impressive scenery. (Depending on current park rules we may spend 6 hours or the entire day in the Crater.) Overnight Gibbs Farm [BLD]
DAY 5 : AUG 21: SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK This morning, refreshed from our stay at Gibbs Farm, we depart the crater highlands and fly to one of the most famous wildlife sanctuaries in the world, the Serengeti National Park. We take an afternoon game drive to view the Serengeti's lions, cheetah and hyena. In addition, we can expect to see Thomsons and Grants gazelles, elands, impalas, klipspringers and warthogs. The Serengeti is the most famous wildlife sanctuary in the world for good reason. Late afternoon return to lodge. Overnight Olakira Camp [BLD]
DAY 6 : AUG 22: SERENGETI Relishing the solitude of our camp's location, and the ability to let wildlife activity dictate our schedule today, we take a morning and afternoon game drive, exploring the bush by open vehicle and learn more about the struggle between predator and prey and the habits of lesser known wildlife. The countryside inspires awe - the scale and vista's, the colors of the dawn and the sunset, the remarkable co-habitation of animals offering one of the very few remaining glimpes of primeval existence that remain. The Serengeti is nothing short of awe inspiring. Overnight Olakira Camp [BLD]
DAY 7 : AUG 23: DEPART We can choose to sleep in or to take one final early morning game drive before breakfast. Late morning we board a light aircraft for a spectacular flight over the Serengeti and back to Arusha. On arrival we transfer to our hotel where we have arranged day rooms untill the evening international flights depart. Shake off the safari dust, walk in the spacious gardens, take a dip in the pool or simply relax in your day room before transferring to the Kilimanjaro International Airport for your journey home. Dayroom at Kia Lodge [BLD]
