India: Kaziranga National Park, Assam
The Kaziranga National Park itinerary is available throughout the year, but the best time to visit Kaziranga is between November and April. Kaziranga's low-lying grasslands are vulnerable to flooding during the monsson when the waters of Brahmaputra River rise. During flooding, many of the animals migrate. The highlights of any visit to Kaziranga are the Tigers and the very rare Indian White Rhino.
Please Note: This itinerary is an ideal extension to the Tigers and Palaces Itinerary, the Royal Rajasthan Itinerary and the Pushkar Fair itinerary (Oct/Nov only) or taken on its own. We can also custom design itineraries in Sikkim and Darjeeling to extend your stay in the Bengla Assam region of north east India.
DAY 1 : KOLKATA (CALCUTTA) Upon arrival in Calcutta, or Kolkata as it is now called, we are met and transferred to our hotel. This evening we have the chance to have diner with an Indian family. Overnight Hotel Oberoi Grand or similar [B]
| | | | | The Indian character is legendary | DAY 2 : KOLKATA: FULL DAY TOUR OF CITY On a monsoon afternoon in August 1690 CE, an English armed merchant ship's Captain, Job Charnock, rowed ashore to the swampy village Sutanati on the bank of the mighty Hoogly River and chose three small villages as an adequate place from which to load and off load trading supplies. The villages grew into Kolkata. Less than three years later, Charnock was dead. Little did he know he had sown the seed of a megopolis. Today Kolkata is India's richest and poorest city. For the visitor it is steeped in history, but drenched in contemporary issues. Kolkata is the very heart of the Indian nation, a center of art and literature, the place to which the serious intellectuals, academics, reformers, and philosophers are drawn. Today we embark on a full day guided tour, rising before dawn to visit the Flower Market, returning to our hotel for breakfast. After breakfast we visit the Jain Temple and one of Mother Teresa's houses of charity. We then visit the Victoria Memorial, the enduring relic of the British Raj. Overnight Hotel Oberoi Grand or similar [BD]
DAY 3 : KAZIRANGA: FLY TO JORHAT, DRIVE TO KAZ'GA This morning we fly to Jorhat and drive to Kaziranga National Park. This is a drive of 110 km and takes around 2 hours. Located on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River in Assam, Kaziranga National Park covers an area of approximately 430-sq-kms. Its swamps and tall thickets of elephant grass are an ideal habitat for the Indian One-Horned Rhino, for which the park derives much of its fame. Other wildlife attractions include Elephants, Indian Bison, Swamp Deer (Barasingha), Hog Deer, Sloth Bears, Tigers, Leopards, Jungle Cats, Otters, Hog Badgers, Capped Langurs, Hoolock Gibbons, Wild Boar, Jackal, Wild Buffalo, Pythons, and Monitor Lizards. Kaziranga National Park is also a birding paradise; the grasslands are ideal raptor country and support populations of Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-Shouldered and Black Kite, Brahminy Kite, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, White Tailed Eagle, Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Himalayan Griffon, and many others. Huge numbers of migratory birds descend on the lakes and marsh areas in winter, including Greylag Geese, Bar-Headed Geese, Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall, Falcated Duck, and the Red-Crested Pochard. Overnight Diplu River Lodge [B]
DAY 4 : KAZIRANGA: ELEPHANT AND JEEP SAFARIS The vast open country makes Kaziranga National Park very accessible. We depart before dawn for an elephant safari. Trained Mahouts guide us as we search for wild elephant and Indian Rhinos, oblivious to our presence when on elephants, which provides opportunities to see animals at close quarters, a rewarding experience. This evening we take a second safari by jeep. Overnight Diplu River Lodge [B]
DAY 5 : KAZIRANGA: ELEPHANT AND JEEP SAFARIS Today we again have a Jeep Safari and an Elephant Safari as we explore this most contrasting of national parks. Elephant Grass is a feature of Kaziranga, and tigers are best viewed from the back of an elephant. Eephant rides are best in the morning, at dawn. Elephant safari's in Kaziranga cover Baguri, Hole Path, Mihimukh, Kohora-Central Path and Arimarah, the best view points for Tiger in the park. When out for an elephant ride, we advise long trousers to protect from abrasions from the coarse elephant-grass. Overnight Diplu River Lodge [B]
DAY 6 : KOLKATA: DRIVE TO JORHAT, FLY TO KOLKATA This morning we drive (2 hours) to Jorhat then catch our flight back to Calcutta. On arrival we are met and transferred to our hotel in the center of the old city. Overnight Oberoi Grand Hotel [B]
