Located in the South-Eastern Kwazulu Natal province of South Africa, Phinda Private Game Reserve is 23,000 hectares of wilderness, made up of seven distinct habitats from woodlands to grassland to the unique dry sand forest. The reserve is just 10 miles from the Indian Ocean and is host to animals such as rhino, elephant, lion and cheetah. Enjoy game drives in open vehicles as well as walking safaris, birding, and cruises and canoeing on the Mzinene River.  Spend three full days exploring this amazing wildlife reserve with expert rangers and eagle-eyed trackers.

DAYS 1-3 :  PHINDA PRIVATE RESERVE
Begin your journey in Johannesburg where you meet the Federal Air flight to Phinda (about 2 hours, flight included). Upon arrival at the airstrip you are met and transferred by road to your lodge in one of the last remaining sand forests in the world. Spend your days on game drives, nature walks, canoe excursions and boat trips through the unique eco-systems of this private reserve. The sand forest is home to a wide variety of birds, mammals and the smallest flowering orchid in the world. Massive elephants move quietly through the ancient trees and lions can be spotted walking along the dusty roads of the grassy plains. Phinda also offers a variety of specialized activities at an extra cost including a scenic light aircraft flight over the coastline and the reserve; snorkeling and swimming at Sodwana Bay; horse-back riding along the beach; tracking white rhino on foot and a cultural visit to the local communities and Zulu sangoma (witchdoctor).

Forest Lodge is a unique luxury camp with only 16 raised glass-encased chalets. Each has a bedroom, lounge and spacious en suite bathroom with a bath and separate shower. Outside, wooden decks have been erected around the growing trees. Although surrounded on three sides by glass, the fertile forest floor and towering torchwood trees ensure privacy in each of the chalets. Constructed to minimize impact on the unique Sand Forest, the air-conditioned rooms are raised off the ground to allow smaller animals the complete freedom of movement along the forest floor below. The main lodge area has a stylish lounge, dining area and bar, and the shaded swimming pool of this overlooks a tranquil vlei (wetland pan). The elevated lookout deck is a prime bird-watching spot for the approximately 400 species at Phinda. [BLD]

DAY 4 :  DEPART
After one last activity and lunch at the lodge, you are transferred to Phinda airstrip to meet the Federal Air flight back to Johannesburg. [BL]

Note: This extension is a luxurious end to any Southern Africa Safari.
