The Uros are a group of 70 man-made islands floating in Lake Titicaca at an altitude of 12,500 feet in the altiplano, or high plains of the Andes between Peru and Bolivia. For centuries, the native Uros people have centered their life around one plant: the totora reed. They created their own island habitat by building up their foundation of reed, constructing their homes and boats from reed, and using a part of the plant in their diet. Today, the Uros maintain agricultural lands on the mainland and invite travelers to visit their island communities. Further offshore, more isolated from mainland Peru in a more serene and peaceful environment, the Aymara Indian residents on Taquile Island retain many aspects of their traditional lifestyle, particularly clothing, exquisite weaving techniques, and simple adobe dwellings.

DAY 1 :  PUNO
Transfer from your hotel in Cusco to embark on the daily direct, Pullman bus service taking 6-7 hours stopping en route for lunch, small villages and guided visits at archaeology sites ($2-$5 entrance fees to sites must be paid upon arrival).Overnight at Sonesta Posada del Inca or similar. [BL]

Note: Unless you really like trains, we don't recommend the Orient Express to Puno. Although the refurbished train carriages feature nicely decorated interior, spacious seat configuration, bathroom facilities, as well as a bar/relaxation area, small boutique, and observation platform, it takes at least 8-10 hours, by-passes sites of interest, and departs on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday only.

DAY 2 :  UROS ISLANDS AND TAQUILE ISLAND
Lake Titicaca, the mythological birthplace of the Incas, is South Americas highest navigable lake at 12,530 ft. above sea level. High, snow-capped Andean peaks rise up from a serene horizon of deep blue water. Native Aymara communities living on islands and around the lakeshore retain many aspects of their traditional lifestyle demonstrating weaving techniques, agricultural methods, and the use of totora reeds to build their homes and boats. Enjoy a full day boat trip to visit Taquile Island and the floating reed islands of the Uros Indians. Return and overnight at the Hotel Posada del Inca Puno. [BL]

Note: Overnight family stays on Taquile Island available by special request.

DAY 3 :  LIMA
Morning transfer to Juliaca airport for your return flight to Lima, or continue on to Copacabana and La Paz, Bolivia. [B]
