Luis Godoy

Luis GodoyRecently chosen top guide in Belize among his peers, Luis has been guiding for 20 years. He was among the first class of certified guides in Belize and has served as president of the Cayo Tour Guides Association. Luis has taken visitors to all major (and lesser known) Maya archaeological sites, spectacular caves, down jungle rivers, in search of birds and wildlife, into the traditional Maya communities, leading professional photography expeditions as well as film documentaries for National Geographic and The Discovery Channel.
Luis is the son of a chiclero, a man who went into the jungles of Belize to collect the sap of the sapodilla tree and boil it down into chicle, from which chewing gum was made.  He grew up hearing stories about jungle adventures, knowing first-hand the birds and wildlife, and fully immersed in the culture of his descendents of the ancient Maya that built the elaborate cities we visit as archaeological sites.
Luis has taken advanced courses in tourism, natural history, rain forest ecology, marine ecology and archaeology, and has worked with the Belize Department of Archaeology and the Belize Zoo. He lives in San Ignacio, Cayo District with his wife Elvia and their three daughters entering their teens.

“Having had the good fortune to travel to every continent except Antarctica, I can truly say that  Luis is the best guide for nature and cultural tourism that I have ever encountered.  He is truly one of the national treasures of Belize.” ~ Jon Y., Eugene, OR

Israel Canto
Luis GodoyA leading guide in Belize with over 15 years experience, Israel has also worked as an assistant resort manager at Hidden Valley Inn.
He was born in the lovely Mayan village of San Antonio in the remote southern Toledo District and graduated in civil engineering from Belize Technical College. He is always continuing his education having completed courses in natural history, protected area management, bird anatomy and physiology, and Maya archaeology including an intensive field course in Caracol with archaeologists Arlene and Diane Chase.  Israel lives in the Cayo District with his wife and 3 children. He especially enjoys leading family groups on active nature and culture trips especially if they involve hiking, caving, inner-tubing or canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking or snorkeling!
