On the edge of the Thar Desert,
Pushkar hosts Rajasthan’s most important agricultural fair, and is one of the
five “dhams” or pilgrimages held in high esteem by Hindus. This once-a-year
nature and culture adventure traverses north central India from the Taj Mahal
in Agra across Rajasthan to the Pink City of Jaipur, off the beaten path to
explore the rural medieval villages around Mandawa en route to the Pushkar Fair,
and then takes us into the depths of tiger country in Ranthambore and
Bandavgarh National Parks. Every year fair dates vary and we strategically time
our arrival before the trading actively starts when migrants to the fair are
setting up, gleefully greeting each other, when there are more cultural
activities and the camels and cattle are fully decorated for great photography.
We then depart before the tourist hoards arrive. Ranthambore and Bandavgarh
National Park are among the best places to see tiger in India which adds to the
photographic excitement of this itinerary. Consider the optional 2-day extension to the sacred city of Varanasi on the Ganges River.
