Adventure Vacations from the Experts

Malawi's climate is influenced by altitude and season. One should expect tropical conditions through out the lowlands near Liwonde National Park and Lake Malawi. While the higher altitude of Nyika National Park and the Zomba mountain range brings cooler temperatures and will usually be chilly in the evening no matter what the time of year. Generally the cool and dry season falls within the months of April to November with the hotter wetter season from November to March. However the north occasionally experiences summer rains while Zomba and Nyika can experience mist and drizzle at any time. Lake Malawi can be windy during the period of June to August and can become quite hot in September and October. As always it is hard to predict the weather and it is best to come prepared with a variety of clothing. However although it is important to bring the basics it is equally important not to pack too much. Laundry services are available either for free or at a minimal charge. For those connecting to light aircraft transfers either within Malawi or elsewhere in Africa, please note that a 12 kg (26 lbs) limit (excluding camera gear) is strictly enforced. Even if you are not using light aircraft 12 kg is usually ample for the amount of clothing needed. For ease of handling, pack gear in soft carry-all bags. For those on extended itineraries, extra luggage can safely be stored at the airport.
