Lapa Rios Ecolodge

  Lapa Rios Ecolodge
Spacious hilltop cabanas with views and a light ocean breeze at Lapa Rios Ecolodge.
Lapa Rios Ecolodge offers a deluxe wilderness adventure, featuring comfortable, attractive accommodations and personalized service in the setting of an ocean-view rainforest reserve in the Osa Peninsula near Corcovado National Park. Lapa Rios has always been among our most highly recommended rainforest lodges in Costa Rica. Wildland Adventures was among the first ecotourism companies to work with Lapa Rios and their founders, John and Karen Lewis, when they built the lodge in 1993. As a result, we enjoy a very close working relationship unlike any other adventure travel company representing the award-winning Lapa Rios resort.

The main lodge and sixteen thatch-roofed bungalows are built in total harmony with nature 350' above sea level on a ridgeline cooled by tropical ocean and forest breezes with spectacular views overlooking white-sand Pacific beaches. Guest bungalows of the Lapa Rios hotel are connected by well-maintained stairway-trails down from the reception and hilltop restaurant; be prepared for some hill walking! The open air bungalows are fully screened each with two queen size beds, an indoor solar- and gas-heated shower, a private garden shower, 2 sinks, large closets, and a large verandah overlooking the rainforest and the Pacific Ocean. There is a swimming pool, gourmet restaurant, full bar and three story observation catwalk. Lapa Rios is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts, birdwatchers, Costa Rica honeymoons, and Costa Rica family vacations for those who seek a remote wilderness setting. Access to Lapa Rios is by commercial or charter flight to Puerto Jimenez and then a 45 minute drive in a 4x4 vehicle on dirt roads to the lodge.

The Lapa Rios kitchen is amazing! (Pick up the cookbook while you're there.) The chefs combine fresh fruits and vegetables with local fish, chicken and meat, enhanced by locally inspired gourmet sauces to provide delicious, healthy meals with a tropical flavor. A full service bar mixes favorite beverages from fresh juices, wines and spirits. Electricity is provided by generator, allowing the property not only the benefit of refrigeration in the kitchen but also the ability to offer simple comforts such as ice and evening reading light. A daily laundry service is available.

The 1,000 acre Lapa Rios Private Rain Forest Reserve offers exceptional wildlife viewing. Miles of private trails lead you, and only the other guests staying at the Lapa Rios eco lodge, through a rainforest wilderness with streams, waterfalls and natural pools for swimming. Resident naturalist guides with years of experience guiding in the reserve point out the fascinating ways that animals and plants co-exist in the tropical rain forest. Listen and watch for birds, rustling on the forest floor, or fruits falling as monkeys and parrots feed in the canopy above. Night walks reveal nocturnal wildlife!. Enjoy the beach and explore tide pools, or spend the day relaxing and bird watching from your verandah.

Along with guided hikes into the private reserve, Lapa Rios offers its guests a variety of additional activities. Among others, these include sea kayaking; visits to botanical gardens; coastal naturalist excursions on shore and by boat; deep-sea catch-and-release fishing; horseback riding in the jungle or along deserted beaches; and private massage therapy. The highlight of many visits is a short plane ride into the heart of Corcovado National Park to explore pristine wildlife with a local guide.
