The Babkin
Explore the pristine coastline, forests and glaciers of Prince
William Sound aboard the M/V Babkin , a comfortable fifty-eight
foot motor yacht and licensed Oceanographic Research Vessel
operated by the VonWichman family out of Whittier. It has three
cabins each with a lower double and upper single bunk comfortably
accommodating 6 adults or more including young children. The
Babkin has two heads and one shower. For private departures and
family groups the spacious lounge also converts into a comfortable
bed for two more persons. The Babkin was built in Tacoma,
Washington in 1997 and was christened with a bottle of champagne
provided by Wildland Adventures on its inaugural voyage. The M/V
Alexandra is a forty two foot fishing and oceanographic research
vessel that is also available for small, private parties or for
larger groups to charter both yachts. It has one forward cabin
with four bunks. In the modest yet comfortable lounge the dining
table can be converted to a bunk. We prefer the Alexandra for small
groups of three to four persons. Please note the Alexandra does
not have a shower.
Captains Alex and Brand Von Wichman were among the first Alaskan
vessels on the scene to assist with wildlife recovery during the
1989 Valdez Oil spill. Since then they have are routinely hired
out by the US Forest Service, Alaska Fish and Wildlife Service,
universities, and the US Geological Survey to support research and
conservation programs. They maintain a commercial fishing license
on the Alexandria. Their life experience in Alaska, including many
trips with research scientists and annual commercial fishing and
crab expeditions, has given them a depth of knowledge and unique
insights into the wildlife, ecology and way of life in Prince
William Sound that they thoroughly enjoy sharing with Wildland
travelers.
