Travel back in time in Turkey
by Sam Owen

Travel back in time on a ruin-studded exploration of Turkey across the Antatolian plateau from Cappadocia to the Aegean Sea. Few destinations win as much praise among experienced travelers as Turkey for discovery and learning, active exploration, cross-cultural encounters, gourmet food, as well as down right fun, swimming and cruising the Aegean coast on board a traditional Turkish gulet. Our hikes in Cappadocia were leisurely, level, yet still remote and without many tourist encounters. The cliffs here are lined with ancient cave chapels, former rock dwellings, and dove cotes. We entered cave upon cave some, former monasteries, many, hiding places from invaders and persecutors of early Christians. Near sunset the eerie shapes of Cappadocia are spectacular - pink-hued formations of soft rock shaped by wind and rain into cones commonly called "fairy chimneys." We even lived in caves! Our accommodation was an incredible boutique hotel, pristine rooms renovated from ancient cave dwellings with modern plumbing and electricity, architecturally designed to bring in natural light and enjoy spectacular views overlooking the picturesque valley.
