Richard Edwards is Conde Nast Travel Specialist
Richard EdwardsWildland Adventures' Vice-President, Richard Edwards, has been named Condé Nast Traveler's Top Travel Specialist for Costa Rica and Nicaragua for 2006. After a rigorous review process Richard was selected for his "…professionalism, creativity, and dedication to the fine arts of travel and customer service." After growing up in Washington State and living in Costa Rica for 12 years, Richard says, "I enjoy bridging cultures by matching the interests and styles of North American travelers with the infrastructure and beautiful places in the region in order to create the ideal, personalized vacation experience for hundreds of Wildland travelers."

When we celebrated in the office, Richard was the first to acknowledge that this distinction for Wildland Adventures is a reflection on each of our destination Program Directors who also command an exceptional, in-depth knowledge of their particular area of expertise and are equally dedicated to the most personal and rewarding approach to adventure travel vacation planning.

 About Us
BIENVENIDOS Costa Rica

Squirrel MonkeyTwenty five years ago Wildland Adventures' founder, Kurt Kutay, returned from Costa Rica after working for their national park service. A few years later he began taking people back to meet his friends and explore the wildlife, rain forests and parks he so loved. Costa Rica became one of Wildland's first destinations and for two decades it has remained numero uno, in part because as soon as one traveler returns they refer their friends and family to Wildland.

And for good reason! We now have the most knowledgeable and professional team of Costa Ricans on our staff including Grettel Calderon in our new field office there, and Irene and Richard Edwards. Okay, Richard isn't really a "Tico" but after 12 years in-country he knows so much about planning nature travel there he won Conde Nast's Costa Rica Travel Specialist Award 2006. (See side bar award).

You'll see more wildlife, learn more about tropical rain forests and have more fun with Costa Rican people on a Wildland Adventure.

Throughout decades of changes in Costa Rica, we have stayed above the fray of fun-in-the-sun, packaged group wildlife tours by maintaining close working relationships with the best of the best in local accommodations, guides and outfitters like our friends at Lapa Rios Rainforest Reserve who love Wildland travelers most (see quote)! Now with Grettel located in Costa Rica, she is always on top of the latest in parks and private nature reserves, and the coolest boutique rainforest lodges and beach accommodations like the beautiful Flor Blanca for Harmony Hotel Poolpeace and romance, or the Harmony Hotel bungalows for a fun, family tropical beach retreat far from the large, golf resort developments. As tourism and conservation evolve in Costa Rica, we continue to improve our itineraries and develop new trips by refining our style of travel around your vacation dates and personal interests, all geared to more discriminating travelers.

Neotropical Foundation receives $25K

Neotropical FoundationAnyone who has traveled with us to Costa Rica over the years should take pride that together we have donated over $25,000 to the Neotropical Foundation for conservation and community development projects throughout the country. It's our way of giving back and one way of off-setting the environmental impacts from carbon release during our trips.

Contributions in 2004-2006 have made it possible for the Foundation's Environmental Educator to work with schools in the Osa region providing visits and directed activities that contribute to socially, economically and environme-ntally sustainable initiatives. Our community-based environmental education project in the Osa Peninsula supported training of more than 3000 local students, 1500 young people from other parts of Costa Rica, and 3000 international visitors.

A mixed group of Costa Rican and international students learns how greater diversification of crops in a smaller space permits restoration of forest cover while improving families' income and nutrition.

More on giving back
