SEE THINGS IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT
The Paynter-Engstrom Family
Traveler's Corner: Southern Africa
The Paynter-Engstrom family immersed themselves in African wildlife and local people on a 13-day Wildland Adventures safari in Botswana in June including a day exploring the Johannesburg area. Wildland Sponsors Peace Scholarship
Chloe Beardsley of Edmonds, WA is the recipient of the Edmonds Community College Foundation's first $1,000 peace scholarship for her essay on how international travel contributes to world peace.
"Interaction with different cultures is part of growing up and learning how the world works, Beardsley writes. "We're here on this earth to learn more about each other."

We are all ambassadors of peace who build understanding and tolerance between individuals and nations as we travel. So, we collaborated with Rick Steves Travel in our community to donate $500 each to the local Snohomish County Peace Action committee in support of college not combat. "With military recruiters inside our high schools and colleges, we want to support our young people to stay in school and think about how they can bring more peace to our community and to the world," says Wildland President, Kurt Kutay.

One Family's African Experience
GiraffesWhen Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist Susan Paynter, and her husband,
P-I Lifestyle Editor John Engstrom, started planning their African safari to Botswana with their 16 year-old son Nate, they considered packages offered by several companies but decided on Wildland Adventures because:

1. We suggested an itinerary that best fit their budget and trip desires.
2. Our "eco-friendly" philosophy of sensitivity to the environment and local people.
3. Our readily available response to phone calls and emails.
4. And, the "helpful, friendly, informative manner" of Southern Africa Program Director, Carmin Arnot, born and raised in South Africa.

Carmin with Elephants Carmin returns to her native Africa every year and travels extensively throughout the Southern African region. She is a profoundly knowledgeable African travel specialist and a fun-loving South African who enjoys matching your travel style, interests and abilities to design your perfect safari.

Amazon Resources Conservation Center, Peru

AudubonAudubon Magazine called to ask where we could send a cracker jack writer and world famous wildlife photographer to an unknown, remote Amazon lodge. So, we sent them one hundred miles, 8 hours by boat, up the Las Piedras River in the Peruvian jungle to the Amazon Rainforest Conservation Center [ARCC], dubbed "The Last Resort" by writer, Alex Shoumatoff. Located on the shores of the wildlife-rich Lake Soledad, aspectacle of wildlife is found here including a resident family of endangered giant river otters, eight species of monkey, hundreds of bird species including flocks of macaws concentrating on several mud licks, large groups of peccaries and 15' caimans, with possible jaguar and anaconda sightings.

Check out the excellent article documenting the Wildland Adventures' trip to ARCC we organized for journalist Alex Shoumatoff, frequent writer in Vanity Fair and author of three books on the Amazon. Alex was accompanied by his 11-year old son and Swedish wildlife photographer, Mattias Klum. The online story includes images from Wildland, but you'll have to pick up the July issue of the magazine to see the photographs taken by Mattias.
