TURKEY TRAVEL WARNING LIFTED
ENJOY SAVINGS ON FALL DEPARTURES
June 19, 2003
Seattle, WA > On May 2, 2003, the U.S.
State Department lifted its travel warning
for Turkey. After many travelers took
a wait and see approach, Seattle-based
ecotourism company Wildland Adventures
is experiencing renewed interest in Turkey
from its clients. In response to this
good news, Wildland is offering substantial
discounts on its Turquoise
Coast Odyssey departures through October
2003. Based on group size, guests can
save up to $380 per person.
Travelers hesitated while the Turkish
people successfully campaigned for peace
and neutrality at the start of the Iraq
conflict, states Kurt Kutay, founder
and president of Wildland Adventures,
who traveled to Turkey frequently as a
young man to stay with his Turkish relatives.
Now, with the war over, tranquility
prevails in Turkey and its heartening
to see that even the U.S. State Department
has declared it safe for Americans to
travel there again.
On the 16-day Turquoise Coast Odyssey,
travelers visit ancient Byzantine churches,
fortified Crusader castles and Ottoman
mosques. From the decks of a Turkish gulet,
a hand-built, wooden sail-motor yacht,
guests can swim in crystalline waters
and snorkel over sunken ruins. When not
onboard the yacht, visitors stay at historic
inns and seaside hotels. One overnight
features a remote village, rarely visited
by western travelers, for an authentic
cross-cultural encounter. Local families
welcome Wildlands clients into their
homes to enjoy dinner and an evening sharing
stories and customs. The odyssey begins
and ends in the ancient city of Istanbul.
Along the itinerary, guests enjoy a drive
through the Taurus Mountains to the Mediterranean
coast, visiting ancient Roman theaters,
Termessos National Park and the Eternal
Fires of the Chimaera. Also included is
a boat ride on the Bosphorus, past palaces
and lavishly restored Ottoman homes, a
hike on ancient foot trails to Lydea,
an ancient Lycian odeon reached only by
trail, and an inland adventure across
the Anatolian plains to Cappadocia, one
of the most enchanting regions of Turkey
where guests explore underground cities
that served as safe havens during the
earliest years of Christianity. The trip
concludes at the splendid ruins of Ephesus,
the capital of the Roman world in Asia.
Scheduled trips are September 6 to 21,
2003 and September 27 to October 12, 2003
with prices starting at $2,585 per person.
Based on group size, guests can save an
additional $380 per person. In addition
to the 16-day Turquoise Coast Odyssey,
Wildland Adventures offers 17-day overland
trips featuring in-depth and authentic
cultural explorations.
