PARENTS AND TEENS RECONNECT EXPLORING THE WORLD
TOGETHER
August 15, 2005
Seattle, WA—Too frequently parent/teen
interaction involves emotional discussions
concerning grades, friends, appearance,
curfew, drugs, and alcohol or simply silence.
The whirlwind of high school activities,
studying, friends, household chores and
jobs leaves little time for meaningful
conversation or simply having fun together.
Seattle-based Wildland Adventures has discovered
that throughout the turmoil of the teenage
years, family travel experiences provide
the perfect opportunity for parents and
teens to re-connect. Combining expertise
in creating authentic and personal worldwide
travel adventures with years of first-hand
experience traveling with growing children,
Wildland has expanded its Family Program
to offer journeys created expressly for
families with teenagers. Each adventure
is crafted to provide an active and adventurous
escape from the stresses and routines of
home creating a chance for family members
to grow closer as they share new experiences
full of conversation, laughter, and a new
appreciation for how other cultures live.
Wildland Teen Family itineraries emphasize
flexibility and independence as well as
activities parents and kids can experience
for the first time together leading to
mutual discovery, whether it’s a
new skill, source of strength, or safely
stepping outside a comfort zone. Indigenous
guides who relate well to teenagers share
their native culture demonstrating new
perspectives on family, living lightly
on Earth and surviving with limited resources.
Wildland Adventures sends families a detailed
trip planning questionnaire that solicits
input from all family members helping to
promote greater understanding and a mutual
interest in creating a memorable vacation
for all family members.
Exploring Costa Rica on the Multisport
Family Adventure, parents and teens raft
Class III & IV white water, swing through
the rain forest on a zipline canopy tour,
snorkel off a secluded island, soak in
the local rhythms and indulge in native
cuisine. Jungle hikes, surfing lessons
and horseback riding on a Pacific beach
create opportunities for precious time
together. Interests among family members
vary so there is a chance for each family
member to discover a new talent on their
own, later to share the day’s adventures
at dinner.
Wildland Adventures scheduled small group
departures or private custom itineraries
take teens and their parents to Belize,
Panama, Peru, Galapagos Islands, New Zealand,
Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana and Turkey.
Highlight activities include cave exploration,
gorilla trekking, sharing a meal with a
native family, hunting with Bushmen, walking
with elephants, kayaking, camping, 4-wheeldriving
and surfing on sand dunes, traditional
native music and dance, snorkeling and
scuba diving, and even an occasional day
for sleeping in. Guides facilitate daily
transportation arrangements, schedule of
activities, accommodations and other details
leading to hassle free travel.
Since its founding in 1986, Wildland Adventures
has been recognized by Conde Nast Traveler
Magazine as one of the world’s best
eco-travel outfitters and recently received
Outside Magazine’s award for “Best
Africa Trip of the Year 2005”.
