KIDS LEARN TO LOVE TRAVEL AND LOVE LEARNING
WHILE THEY TRAVEL ON A WILDLAND FAMILY ADVENTURE

September 23, 2002

Seattle, WA > On a Wildland Family Adventure, it’s about personal experience. Delivering much needed clothing to orphanages in Thailand, going on a bush walk with Masaai warriors at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro, transporting school supplies to children in the mountains of Panama or sharing stories and laughter over dinner in the home of a Turkish family. These deeply personal experiences are what set a Wildland Family Adventure apart.

On a Wildland Family Adventure, parents share the joy of discovery with their children, while kids learn to love travel and love learning while they travel. Each trip is carefully designed with families in mind based on the first-hand knowledge of Wildland Adventures owners, Kurt and Anne Kutay. Kurt and Anne have traveled the world with their own children and have conducted trips for hundreds of families. Each trip is designed so participants are immersed in their personal experience, while always secure in their health, safety and comfort.

Families can plan their own private, custom itinerary or Wildland Adventures will match families with other kids of common age and interests on a scheduled Wildland Family Adventure. Depending on the ages of children and the interests and abilities of parents and grandparents, multi-generational itineraries are possible to any of Wildland Adventures’ worldwide destinations. From toddlers to teens, the most popular family destinations offered by Wildland Adventures are Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, Peru, Galapagos Islands, Alaska, Canada, New Zealand, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Morocco, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan. Prices range anywhere from $595 up to $4,795, depending on age, destination and date of travel. All land costs are included and most itineraries also include local airfare. In addition, children qualify for discounted prices when sharing a room with parents and usually receive an additional discount on international airfare according to individual airline policies.

Families are hosted in distinctive family-style accommodations such as locally-operated B & Bs, boutique hotels, and comfortable native-style lodges that typically include a swimming pool and suites with two or three bedrooms, a living room and kitchenette.

Compared to Wildland Adventures’ regular trips, Wildland Family Adventures meet the special interests and needs of young people. Family Adventures offer parents fun, safety, comfort and much more. The company is dedicated to offering opportunities for kids and parents to have the most authentic, in-depth and meaningful life enhancing experiences. Local guides are often teachers who combine a mastery of their profession with personal parenting experience. They often introduce Wildland families to their families, make archaeology come alive through fun interpretive skills, and share amazing treasures of the living world. They often bring their own children in tow to enhance the fun and cross-cultural experiences.

“We know by our own experience, if the kids are stimulated, having fun and feel safe, then parents are usually having a good time too,” notes Wildland president, Kurt Kutay. “The better prepared, the more participants will enjoy their trip, so we provide thorough pre-departure information for parents and send personalized packets to children including posters, diaries, language and geography primers.” For example on rain forest trips and African safaris, pre-departure packets for kids include colorful posters, laminated animal identification guides, booklets about rain forests and wildlife and young reader references.

Since its founding in 1986, the company has been recognized as a leader in ecotourism including a recommendation by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine as one of the world’s best eco-travel outfitters. “Although our customers continue to choose Wildland Adventures because of our commitment to conservation and local cultures, today’s active, educated and experienced travelers, particularly when traveling with children, want authenticity balanced with the amenities of charming hostelry, nourishing local cuisine, reliable transportation, and exceptional indigenous guides,” notes Kutay. “A personal Wildland experience delivers a real world without artifice; a world that craves our understanding and compassion rather than our judgment; a world that seeks to welcome us rather than entertain us.”

###

Since its inception in 1986, ecotourism has been the cornerstone of Wildland Adventures’ trips, offering cultural and natural history explorations as a means to protect natural environments, preserve cultural heritage and bring direct economic benefits to local communities through projects such as the company’s non-profit Travelers Conservation Trust. Always practicing what it preaches, Wildland Adventures keeps its trips to very small groups in order to limit any impact on the environment. Owner Kurt Kutay is a founding member of the Board of Directors of The Ecotourism Society and the International Galapagos Tour Operators Association. The company is also a member of the Center for Responsible Tourism, a worldwide network of individuals and organizations working for more socially and environmentally responsible tourism and supports the work of Cultural Survival, which serves to inform the general public and policy makers about self-determination of tribal people and ethnic minorities.

Other destinations offered by Wildland Adventures include Costa Rica, Belize, the Andes and the Amazon, Patagonia, Alaska, British Columbia, Africa, New Zealand and more.
