UNDISCOVERED BELIZE
New Wildland Adventure Explores the “Forgotten Land”

January 31, 2006

Seattle, WA—Until recently, the Toledo District of southern Belize and its independent native Maya population had long been isolated from the rest of this small Caribbean adventure destination by rugged mountains, impassable roads, and rustic accommodations.

Referred to by Toledans as “the forgotten land,” it is the most sparsely populated, least developed region in the country, and the least visited area in Belize – making it a natural destination for Seattle-based tour operator Wildland Adventures.

The new eight-day “Undiscovered Belize Adventure” takes guests to the remote rainforest, rugged mountains, beautiful beaches, pristine coral reefs and native Maya villages of southern Belize with seven departures in 2006 (from $1,695 per person, all inclusive.)

“Completion of the Southern Highway now provides access to this remote area, and working together with the new, world-class Lodge at Big Falls as our base of exploration, we have developed close-working relationships with surrounding communities who will show us their land and native lifestyle in this remote corner of Central America,” says Kurt Kutay, President of Wildland Adventures.

Intrepid travelers venture into the lush foothills of the Maya Mountains, a rugged, unexplored territory to hike deep into the rainforests, kayak on meandering streams, and explore the Blue Creek Cave system, a labyrinth of limestone caves and underground rivers.

Native Mayan guides lead the way to jungle-covered ruins that exist as if just discovered, and introduce guests to their villages - remarkable cultural discoveries in their own right.

Here guests will visit the workshop of a traditional harp player who crafts his own instruments from tropical cedar wood, and spend time with a farmer and his family at an organic fair-trade cacao plantation. Travelers will celebrate with African Garifuna dancers and drummers native to the coast at a special dinner in Punta Gorda. The Wildland Adventure concludes at a tropical Caribbean beach front cabana for snorkeling and optional diving amidst the Belize Barrier Reef, the largest in the Western Hemisphere.

Wildland Adventures has launched a series of innovative, community-based tourism initiatives designed to bring its guests closer to local people for more authentic interactions between travelers and their hosts, who benefit from the tourist visit. In addition to its “Undiscovered Belize Adventure,” the company offers Belize Family, Honeymoon, Active Adventure, and Explorer packages.

The May, 2006 Belize Explorer package centers around the Belize Cashew Festival (May 5-14, 2006, $1850 all-inclusive in Belize) where travelers celebrate the beginning of the cashew nut harvest in Crooked Tree Village. During the festival, cashews are used to make cashew jelly, cake, juice and cashew wine. Apart from sampling the cashews and cashew foods, the festival also features storytelling and live Creole music.

Since its founding in 1986, Wildland Adventures has been recognized by Conde Nast Traveler Magazine as one of the world’s best eco-travel outfitters and recently received Outside Magazine’s award for “Best Africa Trip of the Year 2005”.
