Julio Flores Master Guide
Our Nicaragua guide, Julio Flores, was born in 1978 and grew up in the capital city of Managua where he presently resides with his wife and young son. He earned a degree at the Autonomous National University of Nicaragua. He perfected his language skills working as a high school English teacher and developed an expertise as a mechanic working in his father’s radiator shop, two important skills for a Nicaragua tour guide! Julio started his guiding career accompanying biologists, foreign volunteers, and translating for groups of US farmers on professional agricultural exchange tours. Since 2002, he has become one of Nicaragua’s top tour guides, sharing his passion and knowledge of the culture, fauna, flora, and the fascinating history of Nicaragua.
Julio grew up in a large family home that was left in his father’s care by its former owners who fled when the Sandinistas came to power. He has always had particularly special insights into the Sandinista regime, if for no other reason that his house was next door to Sandinista leader (and current President) Daniel Ortega’s home. When he climbed the tree in his yard he could look over into Ortega’s compound and was quickly rebuffed by the security forces to get down! As the oldest of six siblings Julio is helping his siblings financially to attend school.
“Julio Flores is the best guide we’ve ever had. He is intelligent, knowledgeable and good humored and gave us such an understanding of Nicaraguan people, politics, history, and geography. And what a delightful person—he went out of his way to make the trip special for us. We highly recommend him!”
